Vicki To Speak at the STANYS Conference in Rochester

Are you a science teacher in New York planning to attend the annual conference of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) in Rochester, NY (November 6-9, 2010)? If yes, come hear Vicki speak at two workshops. One workshop will discuss planet hunting and the search for alien life, and the second will demonstrate how research techniques can be integrated into the science curriculum for 4th-8th grades.

Want to learn more about the various organizations in New York City that support writers for children and young adults? Come to the New York Public Library Children's Center on Saturday, October 9, at 2:00 pm.

Vicki will speak as a representative of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) about the many ways the SCBWI helps writers. Joining Vicki will be Susanna Reich from PEN and Pat Cummings from The Author's Guild.

The panel is part of the library's monthly Children's Literary Salon,organized by children's librarian Elizabeth Bird.

LIBRARY PRESENTATION

-Vicki spoke about planet hunting to a large crowd of adults, children, and teens at The Quogue Library, in Quogue, New York. What a fantastic group! The kids helped demonstrate many of the techniques, which made for a fun and interactive evening.

SCHOOL VISIT

-Librarians and fifth graders at PS 87 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan welcomed Vicki to their EVERYBODY READS WEEK. Vicki presented a PowerPoint about planet hunting, her trip to the Keck Observatory, and how she researched her book.

-Vicki spoke to Ms. Allison Smith's 6th grade science class at the Wallenpaupack Middle School, in Hawley, PA. about planet hunting techniques and extrasolar planets. What a great, enthusiastic group of kids!
